John Stephenson, Chief Commercial Officer of Wizz Air added: “We are very pleased to start flying from Durham Tees Valley. The airport is ideally placed to serve a large population area including Newcastle and provides excellent connectivity to the neighbouring cities. We believe that the good economics together with its operational flexibility and the development potential of the airport will make it a perfect fit for Wizz Air. Surely our new passengers from Tees Valley will enjoy our low fares and excellent services as much as our Polish travellers, who are already familiar with Wizz Air as the largest low cost carrier in Central and Eastern Europe.”
Mark Clarkson, Business Development Manager of Durham Tees Valley Airport added: “We are absolutely delighted that Wizz Air has chosen Durham Tees Valley as its North East base and today marks a significant step forward for the airport and the region. The three times per week service offers the people of the North East an unrivalled opportunity to visit one of the most historic cities in Europe and explore the wider Polish market.
“Wizz Air is the largest low cost carrier in Central and Eastern Europe and with Durham Tees Valley’s central location in the North East of England coupled with efficient and low cost transport links, Polish visitors to the region can now easily take advantage of the many interesting attractions that we have to offer.”
Tom Warburton, Head of Regeneration at One North East said: “We are pleased to have been able to support Durham Tees Valley airport in securing the new route to Warsaw through the route development programme.
“The £4m fund was set up to help the region’s airports attract new scheduled air routes to the North East with the aim of improving the regions accessibility to international business routes and to encourage inbound tourism.
“The number of new airlines looking to establish routes to Durham Tees Valley airport shows the region remains a very attractive place to do business or visit.”
